Twitter launches official Tweet Button

Twitter, search engine optimization, social media |

In today’s online marketing landscape, social media has become deeply ingrained into search engine optimization. And quite logically so since the entire idea behind both involve linking, content optimization and cultivating all that on a socially vibrant platform to drive traffic while developing your brand’s online reputation.

Twitter remains to be one of the most popular social networks around and it has gotten a pretty impressive traction since its launch. It’s also one of today’s most reliable social media platforms marketers are relying on despite its rather limiting 140-character content structure. Earlier today, the microblogging giant unveiled a new feature in its arsenal: its official Tweet Button.

As announced by Carolyn Penner, a former Googler and now member of the Twitter Communications team, the new Tweet Button aims to make content sharing simple by letting you share links directly from the page you’re on.

“When you click on the Tweet Button, a Tweet box will appear - pre-populated with a shortened link that points to the item that you’re sharing.” Penner said. “After you post to Twitter, you may see suggestions for accounts to follow. These accounts are suggested by the web site you visited and may include, for example, the news outlet and reporter of the article you shared.”

If you’ve been around the social Web then Penner’s description of the button’s functionality will sound really familiar. And it should because that’s how Tweetmeme works, a tweet aggregating and retweeting service most blogs (including ours) are currently using.

In case this is beginning to sound like Twitter’s jumping into third-party Twitter developer domain again like what it has done to URL shorteners, photo hosting services and the Twitter mobile app, it seems like there’s a direct partnership between Twitter and Tweetmeme. It hasn’t been explicitly revealed whether there’s a Tweetmeme acquisition that occurred under the radar but Penner cited that the two will be working closely together and that “from here on out, they will be pointing to the Twitter Tweet Button.”

Meanwhile, over at the Tweetmeme stable, founder and CEO Nick Halstead’s blog post announcement also briefly mentioned the partnership.

“What does this mean? Firstly we will be assisting Twitter with the technical challenges involved with the button and secondly we will be working even more closely in the future on delivering real-time curation of the Twitter Firehose. This will manifest itself in the launch of a number of new products and the first of these is being unveiled today.”

As of writing, Twitter has come out with 13 initial sites that incorporate the Tweet Button including CBS Interactive, USA Today, Gawker Media, The Huffington Post, The Onion and Threadless. We should be expecting tons of implementation within the coming days. In fact, you can already grab the button if you own a site or blog; just head on over to Twitter’s Goodies Page that will present you with a seamless way to do so by simply supplying the details like the URL of the blog post you would like to share and then it’ll generate a code which you just copy and paste onto your site.

On the other hand, if you’re a developer and would like to create an app that uses the technology behind the Tweet Button, Twitter’s Developers page details other ways to integrate it to you site, complete with a tad bit of coding tweaks using Javascript and iFrames.
