One of the biggest announcements to come out of the Facebook trails off their F8 developers’ conference in San Francisco this week has got to be the Open Graph. This new feature allows a tighter integration with third party Web sites and it feels like the culmination of the social networking site’s slowly evolving capabilities.

The idea behind it revolves around the concept of social graphs which is a structured connection between people and hinged on common friends and similar interests like objects, activities and celebrities. Every Web site or service (especially those with social networking aspects) have their own social graphs which are usually centered on their specified fields of interests; business listings and consumers for Yelp, bands and music fans for Pandora, for instance.

The biggest trends nowadays include localized searches and cross platform information sharing, and the Open Graph allows both.

Open Graph aims to intertwine these into one social graph in a bid to make the Web more connected than ever. As a result, some Facebook functionalities can cross over to participating Web sites and every activity conducted within reflects on the users’ News Feed of status updates.

While some users see this as a disastrous privacy issue waiting to happen, it affords a lot of convenience for most, especially for Web site developers, owners and online marketers. If you’re representing a relatively new brand that has yet to see considerable results in reaching your target demographic, implementing Open Graph into your site and overall campaign strategy can be very beneficial.

Open Graph provides a better chance of potential clients discovering you and your products, what with Facebook’s user base of over 40 million offering even more favorable opportunities of propagating your message on Facebook. Affixing a Like or a Recommend button will also allow your existing customers another way to keep track of new developments on your products and services without leaving Facebook.
