Google launches Android App Inventor

We here at SEOP.com have always believed that mobile is a robust platform for any kind of brand to take advantage of. Indeed it is and one of the best ways to get your word out to the mobile Internet community is by developing apps. The iPhone, the Blackberry and the Android have pretty much opened up their services to accommodate developers with their well crafted and sometimes single-function apps. Now, thanks to Google’s open attitude towards Web and app development, even if you’re not a developer yourself, you can create an app with the App Inventor for Android.
As announced by Google Engineer Mark Friedman on the Google Blog, the App Inventor for Android is a new tool in Google Labs that makes it easy for anyone, regardless of programming experience, to create mobile applications for Android-powered devices.
Based on the accompanying video, the app development tool carries an idiot-proof interface and very easy to use, provided that you have a readily available Android phone and some basic understanding of a few essential desktop computer actions. It’s very easy that Google has been testing it in schools around the country since last year.
It contains a set of predefined app elements like buttons, checkboxes and text fields which you can drag and drop onto a workspace. From here, you can modify their properties like titles, the font size and color their presented in and even the action triggered when they are tapped on the phone’s touchscreen. It will even let you use built-in phone features like GPS and text messaging and can even be linked with Web sites like Twitter or Amazon.
With the App Inventor for Android, it’ll be a cinch to create an app your brand can use and make readily available on the Android Market. This can sure surpass the iTunes App Store on its three-billion app pedestal though we really can’t vouch for the quality of the apps Android’s mobile store will host.
With this in mind, it’ll be up to you and your marketing skills and knowledge of your demographic whether you should jump onboard the app train or not. But of course, it never hurts to have a multi-platform presence.
From here, depending on the brand you represent, you can create single-function ones that merely feature your brand to push brand awareness, an RSS feed-based app to inform your demographic on your new products, a useful productivity tool built around your brand, a really engaging game that prominently features your products or maybe a location-based service that points to branches of your store on a map and displays latest deals and discounts-the possibilities are endless. Now, head on over to the drawing board and start planning.
